Be part of the change. Become digitally sustainable
The B Lab Switzerland Working Group for Sustainable Digital Transformation organises workshops and events to help Swiss companies:
Digital transformation profoundly impacts businesses and daily life. However, this shift is largely driven by major tech companies focused on profit-driven models. Our goal is to promote a sustainable and responsible digital transition for Swiss businesses.
Digital services are increasing environmental impacts through high energy use, e-waste, and rapid hardware replacement. However, IT is also part of the solution. We call it IT for Sustainability—reconciling Sustainable IT and IT for sustainability to create positive change.
Digital technology contributes significantly to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion and loss of biodiversity. To mitigate its impact, digital equipment is optimised by considering its entire life cycle, extending the life of equipment and designing sustainable digital services in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable practices that reduce material and energy consumption are promoted, while circular economy principles are integrated by treating obsolete equipment as a valuable resource. Finally, the use of renewable energy sources is prioritised to support the energy transition and reduce the carbon footprint.
Digital services can lead to social exclusion, individualisation or ‘forced obsolescence’ of hardware and software. To address these challenges, the development of accessible, inclusive and sustainable digital services will be promoted. A responsible purchasing approach is generalised through the adoption of social and environmental clauses, while applications are designed to be accessible to all, including people with disabilities, and to function on limited bandwidth without requiring the latest equipment. Services are structured around the 3 U principles – Useful, Usable, Used – to ensure universal accessibility and e-inclusion, with user involvement in the design phase to avoid oversized tools and improve sustainability compliance.
The future of organisations depends on the transparent and trustworthy use of digital technologies for all. To support this, ethical and sustainable digital practices will be prioritised, ensuring a reasoned use of data that considers environmental and societal impacts. Only necessary data is collected to protect privacy, in line with GDPR and LPF, while minimising the environmental footprint of data processing. Diversity in recruitment, professional equality and improved working conditions for digital workers are promoted, alongside a strong commitment to algorithmic ethics, particularly in artificial intelligence. Sustainable development goals are reinforced internally and shared externally to engage stakeholders in the journey towards sustainable digital transformation.
The transition to sustainable IT is essential to ensure the resilience of organisations. To achieve this, digital technologies and services must be measurable, transparent and understandable. Common standards will be followed to collect, analyse and share data on the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT). A collaborative approach is used to design and evaluate digital services based on real needs, while innovation in data collection and analysis tools ensures transparency and visibility.
Digitalisation is a powerful lever for value creation, and shaping the future starts today. To foster the emergence of new behaviours and values, social innovation is integrated into the design of digital systems and services. Internal initiatives that promote collaboration, well-being at work and resource-efficient practices are emphasised, with a focus on quality and job creation. Stakeholder expertise is engaged in collaborative efforts around employment, inclusion and quality of life, while future generations are empowered to innovate in harmony with ecosystems. Performance and compliance indicators are monitored to achieve CSR goals, with continuous improvement as a guiding principle.
